The World of the Brothers Grimm

Presented by Mike Haas

If at its core Kultur can be defined as what a people choose to pass down to their children, then the folklore collected by the Brothers Grimm represents a vibrant tapestry of the German-speaking world’s distinct past.

In this online presentation, participants are invited to journey through the landscapes that inspired these timeless tales—from meandering rivers and misty valleys to ancient forests and crumbling castle ruins.

Together, we’ll explore how the Brothers Grimm captured not only fairy tales, but the cultural memory and moral imagination of a people. Through their stories, proverbs, and poems, we’ll uncover what everyday life, beliefs, and values looked like in 19th-century Germany—and consider how these elements of folklore continue to influence culture and storytelling today.

Can't make it to the online presentation? Join us instead for the in-person presentation at the DANK Haus on January 22nd from 7 PM - 8:30 PM!
