Betwixt & Between the Good Book and the Sword:
The Northern Crusade of the Teutonic Knights & the Founding of Prussia

Presented by Mike Haas

Thursday, Dec. 10 | 7:00-8:30 PM

The Teutonic Knights were a papally sanctioned order of warrior/monks which would “take up the cross against the infidel” in various crusades between the 12th and 15th centuries.

It would be their 13th century mission to convert the pagan “Prus” in the Baltic lands of northeastern Europe, however, that their renown would be heralded and notoriety exposed.

This “Northern Crusade” would ultimately result in the Order’s transitioning from a monastic state owing allegiance only to the pope and Holy Roman emperor

to an independent, corporate Teutonic State—owing allegiance only to its Grand Master.

Many wars and centuries later, however, the now former Deutschordensstaat would re-emerge as Prussia--the most powerful geo-political player in Protestant Europe.
