MANN IN DER MITTE: MAX SCHMELING

Presented by Mike Haas

Max Schmeling, the German boxing great of the 1920s and 30s, is the tale of an athlete caught between two worlds: the boxing world in America, which Schmeling needed to further his professional career, and the Germany that turned Nazi in the prime of his career. Schmeling’s fame—if not notoriety for some—came to him for his two fights against Joe Louis—perhaps the best heavyweight boxer of all time—in 1936 and 1938. Fights in which he was portrayed in the American press as Adolf Hitler’s “Superman.” Schmeling proved, however, despite circumstances well beyond his control on both sides of the Atlantic, to be very much his own man—not only then, but throughout his long life.
