Wenn ich groß bin - When I grow up

August 6 - August 17, 2018

DANK Haus Kinderschule Sommercamp for kids ages 4-8 and 9-12 is a fun way to stay connected with German language and culture while school is on break ... or to get a first taste of it. We have two fun-packed weeks planned for our "apprentices" to explore "Berufe" (professions). We will find inspiration for hands-on projects when visiting local fashion and interior designers, Lincoln Square bakers and cooks, purchase fresh snacks at the Farmers Market right outside our doors, haul food donations and unclaimed Lost & Found clothing items to the The Friendship Center Food Pantry, say "Hallo" to Yoga instructors ... and more! Sommercamp is hosted August 6 through 17 from 9am to 3pm. Before & after care is available. Flexible registration for one or two weeks.

Here is a growing list of neighbor businesses we are excited about visiting this summer:

Meet the Team

Low child - instructor ratio!  We register a maximum of 20 children for two instructors and one assistant!  Field Trips will have additional staff.

We are happy for Gudrun Priemer to return for a fourth summer as a Sommercamp head teacher. Gudrun began teaching at the DANK Haus Kinderschule in 2005. She loves books and is passionate about teaching early literacy skills to young children. After working as a school librarian as well as adult and youth service librarian at Chicago Public Library, Gudrun is currently creating and running classes as well as storytimes for young children at the Skokie Library.  Initially teaching upper grades (5-8) Kinderschule classes, she now has been very excited to teach German through stories, songs, rhymes, arts & crafts and play in our Kinderschule Kindergarten class in recent school years. Gudrun was born and grew up in Berlin, and has lived in Chicago since 1987 and has two sons.

How exciting to see Isabelle Flegel back in Sommercamp! Isabelle is from what she refers to as “the former island” of West Berlin. As a teenager in high school, she witnessed the bewildering and exciting time leading up to the taking down of the Berlin Wall and the German reunification first hand. She studied French, Spanish and Biology at The Freie Universität Berlin. At that time she become an environmental organizer with the Young People’s and Artists’ Climate Summit, which hosted 30 activists from 15 different countries during the UN summit in Berlin. Instead of starting an internship in the Brazilian rain forest as planned, she chose to swap one concrete jungle for another and moved to Chicago, where she has lived and worked in multiple fields. She had her own import business, is a doula, a certified health coach and workshop instructor. Given her interest and passion for languages and cultures, she became a German teacher 7 years ago and has taught both adults and children at the University of Chicago, Language Loop, Kinderwerkstatt, Dankhaus and as a private tutor.

Anna Pajak is back for her second year co-teaching Sommercamp at DANK Haus! She joined Kinderschule in Fall 2015 and has been teaching our young Level 2 students this year.  Anna is currently a Visiting Instructor of German Language at Purdue University Calumet. After graduating from High School in Fürstenberg (Brandenburg) in 2006, she moved to Chicago to pursue Germanic Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Anna began teaching German in the Basic German Language Program at UIC in her second year of graduate school and received recognition for excellence in teaching.  She also taught German and Polish to professional soldiers.  Anna’s teaching experience extends beyond linguistics.  Every summer since 2006, Anna has been teaching tennis throughout Chicago and New York City.  Teaching tennis has helped her with teaching German because learning a foreign language is fundamentally like learning a new sport.  Both are long-term processes that develop a person’s lifelong perspectives.  Anna - a recipient of several academic honors and scholarships - holds a BA in Media and Communications and Germanic Studies as well as a MA in Germanic Studies.
